After posting a career year with the Toronto Argonauts, S.J. Green gets rewarded with a two-year contract extension.

Looking back on the 2017 CFL season, there are many storylines that earned a lot of recognition especially when the Toronto Argonauts embraced the underdog role and beat the Calgary Stampeders for the Grey Cup.

One story that seemed to get lost in that eventful season was the comeback story of S.J. Green. After suffering a tough knee injury who many thought his best days were behind him especially the Montreal Alouettes who traded the All-Star receiver for a 2017 sixth round pick and a conditional pick in 2018.

The Florida-native showed that he still had a lot left in the tank setting a career best season with 104 receptions for 1,462 yards which was second best in the CFL. He was Ricky Rays favourite target in the passing game and if the Argos needed a big play downfield the ball was most likely going to Green.

That was evident in the 23 receptions of 20+ yards last season and 10 touchdowns which were usually featured on the highlight reel.

Argos’ season ticket holders were given an exclusive look at the signing with GM Jim Popp announcing the signing at an event with Green in attendance.

This signing should give some relief to Argos fans after what has been an up and down offseason for the team. They have brought back Ray, Armanti Edwards, Cleyon Laing  and acquired James Franklin but could be without James Wilder Jr. and Victor Butler who are in a standoff about their contract situation.

It was also announced that Devier Posey will not be back for next season as he was released by the team to pursue an NFL opportunity. Having Edwards and Green back in the fold for 2018 should not disrupt the passing game too much and it allows for the team look to give younger players an opportunity or look at what is available in free agency.

The team will need to make a decision on the defensive side of the ball with; Bear Woods, Mitchell White, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, Cassius Vaughn, Johnny Sears Jr., and Daryl Waud up for extension.  Canadians’ Matt Black, and Jermaine Gabrielare also up for renewal.

Next: Ricky Ray returns for one more season

It should be a busy offseason for the Grey Cup Champions but they are certainly in a better place than they were last season when Popp and Marc Trestman were just starting with the team at this time.
