As the Toronto Argonauts look to establish a rhythm on offence, Cam Phillips is turning into an important receiver.

It has taken Cam Phillips some time but he is starting to solidify his role within the Toronto Argonauts offence. It’s also one the team has desperately needed.

Back in Touchdown Atlantic, Phillips recorded his first CFL touchdown as McLeod Bethel-Thompson found him wide open for a 40-yard touchdown. In the rematch against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, it was Phillips who had to make a difficult catch to haul in the tying score.

Now with the team dealing with injuries including veteran DaVaris Daniels who will miss Sunday’s game against the Ottawa Redblacks with a head injury, the team will be relying on Phillips to step up and fill the void.

“Cam is just a smart football player, he brings a lot of attributes,” Bethel-Thompson explained. . He’s a good hands catcher, he knows where to be at the right time and at the right timing.”

Not only is Phillips providing the Argos offence with a boost with his ability to get free in coverage, but he is also adding some creativity as well.

The 26-year-old is the main organizer of the team’s touchdown celebrations and takes a lot of pride in bringing some fun to the field.

“Playing a long season like we play, you got to have some fun with it,” Phillips explained. “And that’s all I tried to do just bring some energy and I’m glad that you know that we’re feeling that family atmosphere.”

It’s that joy Phillips provides that makes him a great player to play with according to his teammates. Given how tough of a journey it’s been for him to get to this point, it’s easy to see why the team is excited about what he can bring.

In his first season with Toronto, two hamstring injuries impacted him to the point where he was frustrated about the bad luck he went through. Now he is looking to bring a new gear to the Argos offence that is trying to establish its identity.
