Looking at what happened the last time the Buffalo Bills won the AFC East.

The Buffalo Bills have done it.

For the first time in 25 years, the Bills are Division champions.

Since Jim Kelly and the Bills 10-6 1995’ season, every other team in the division has at least two titles, leaving Buffalo as the odd team out for a quarter-century.

Even the Indianapolis Colts had won the AFC East more recently, doing so in 1999 before the league created the South Division in 2002.

All that is no more. The Bills will play a home game in January, and will more likely than not hold onto the second seed in the AFC, meaning they will avoid a date with the Chiefs until the AFC title game.

How different were things, the last time the Bills were East champions?

Universals “12 Monkeys” dominated the box office the last time the Buffalo Bills clinched a division. If that dark, apocalyptic sci-fi flick was too much for you, you could go to see Balto – the animated movie released two weeks earlier.

Earlier in the year, we had Die hard with a Vengeance (this one isn’t a Christmas movie), and Toy Story dominate the box office, though don’t sleep on Val Kilmer’s  Batman Forever, which was released in the summer.

Mariah Carey and Boys II Men’s  “One Sweet Day” dominated the airwaves that December, though Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” finished the year number 1 on the Billboard charts.

Los Angeles lost both their NFL teams this season, they wouldn’t return until the Rams moved from St. Louis at the start of the 2016 season.

Baseball returned from the strike, playing a shortened season that ended the Blue Jays’ prolonged reign as champions.

The Great one was beginning to become disgruntled in Los Angeles – he would join the St. Louis Blues in a trade early in 96.

Michael Jordan was playing in his first full season since returning from baseball, his Bulls were enjoying a 9-0 run in December 95’, when the Bills clinched the East. They would end the month 13-1.

Oh, and the hot tech item on everyone’s Christmas list? Sony’s Playstation (1), which was enjoying its first Christmas in the North American market.

Translation: It’s been a while since the Bills fans could celebrate what Josh Allen and co. have earned them tonight. But the journey isn’t over.

Sean Mcdermott’s team is clicking at the right time, and for the first time this millennium, Bills fans can realistically expect a bit of a playoff run.

Not a bad way to ring in the new year.
