Toronto Blue Jays: Reviewing 2020 MLB Trade Deadline Moves
Jonathan Villar brings some much-needed speed
The Villar trade helps Toronto’s infield with its internal depth struggling to produce in the absence of Bo Bichette. It might not be Andrelton Simmons but this still fills a pressing need.
While expecting to replace Bichette is not easy, Villar’s addition can now put some other players in better positions to succeed. The 29-year-old is hitting .259 with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBI this season but his true value comes from his ability to steal bases at will where he leads the league with nine.

Of course, it’s no secret the team has been looking for more utility players as it gives them more flexibility in their lineup.
"“He has the ability to play shortstop on a very regular basis, ability to play outfield, play centrefield, can bounce around all the infield positions,” said Atkins. “Versatility was attractive, switch-hitting was attractive, stealing a base was attractive. Very exciting piece.”"
The team can now feel better about having Villar move to third base or the outfield if and when Bichette returns this season. Apparently, he can also play in the outfield but that won’t be a decision that gets made until Villar joins the team.
All in all, the Blue Jays didn’t make the major splashes like the San Diego Padres but considering they were able to improve without giving up anything substantial, it’s tough to be critical.
