How the expanded playoffs impact their chances?

Earlier this week, Matt Grave took a look at the team’s chances to make the post-season but that was before MLB made changes to the format.

This certainly improves the team’s chances significantly but that doesn’t mean it’s a lock that they make it either. The AL Central will likely earn a bonus from more spots opening up but that shouldn’t push Toronto out of the way.

Looking at the roster on paper, the team definitely has more depth with starting pitching and options in the infield but their outfield depth is a bit of a concern. An injury to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has Derek FIsher now starting in left field which is certainly not what the team planned for.

This will be a true test for the team to stay healthy and get production from those in a position to be the key contributors. On top of that, the Blue Jays have a really tough schedule in September so if they don’t build up enough of a cushion by then, it’s going to be a real grind to end the season.

Regardless, this is a season where the team needs to take a step forward to compete and even if they don’t make it this season, any improvements they can make will only benefit them going into 2021.
