With rumours suggesting Matt Dumba is available on the trade block, it appears the Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly shown interest in the defenceman.

Sitting out of the playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs will have a lot of eyes on them ahead of the trade deadline as per usual because of their need to acquire a defenceman.

One name that has been receiving a lot of attention on the trade block is Matt Dumba who is going through a tough season with the Minnesota Wild. It looks like the Leafs are one of a few teams that have inquired about the young defenceman according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

"“They have looked into Minnesota’s Mathew Dumba, who fits with Toronto’s modus operandi — he has three years remaining on his contract,” Friedman wrote in his column."

It shouldn’t surprise anyone to see the Leafs showing interest in Dumba considering defencemen like him aren’t usually available on the trade block often.

Friedman also said the Leafs “are investigating every good defenceman on the market,” which sounds like a no-brainer considering the team needs to improve their defence before the playoffs.

It will help if Rasmus Sandin can continue to produce because  Toronto can focus on the right side of their blue line. While Friedman mentions that Dubas is looking at every good defenceman on the market, there aren’t many that fit the mould the team is looking for.

Other than Dumba, there aren’t many names out there that the Leafs could trade for that will bring the significant impact they are probably looking for. This is why the 25-year-old seems like the most logical option.

Of course, his salary going forward will be a topic of conversation considering the Leafs are tight to the cap. They could easily make room by including a player like Kasperi Kapanen in the deal along with an expiring option like Cody Ceci to make the salaries match.

At the same time, Toronto will have to sweeten the deal considerably considering Dumba’s age and his ceiling is pretty high. While he has a reputation as an offensive defenceman, he can play big minutes and is not shy about throwing his body around.

While hearing that the Leafs have looked at Dumba sounds like a positive, there is still a lot of uncertainty including what Minnesota would want in a potential deal.
