Toronto Raptors power forward Chris Boucher will join Canada Basketball for the Olympic qualifiers showing how far he has come in his career.

Chris Boucher has been one of the many feel-good stories on the Toronto Raptors this season and it looks like he’s being rewarded for it.

The Canadian announced that he will be joining the team for the Olympic qualifiers and it’s a deserving call for a player who could be a crucial part to the team in the summer tournament. Of course, this doesn’t happen without the injury to Serge Ibaka which has put Boucher in a position to earn more playing time.

In 15 games this season, Boucher 26, is averaging 6.2 points and 5.1 rebounds whie shooting 44.7 per cent from the field while also providing some much needed defensive depth on the bench.

Obviously, this week has been a positive one for Canada Basketball with star players who followed Jamal Murray’s lead to announce their desire to play for Canada as they try to get back to the Olympics for the first time since 2000.

This is a crucial time for the national program considering how much Canadian talent is playing in the NBA right now. Of course, things will likely change between now and the summer but getting these players to say yes this early should be seen as a positive development.

During the FIBA World Cup, Canada didn’t have a lot of NBA talent go to China to compete because of injuries and some deciding to prioritize their preparation for the NBA season. Canada will play against Greece, the Czech Republic, Turkey, China and Uruguay in their last chance to make the Olympics when the tournament takes place on June 23-28 in Victoria.
