A recent report suggested that the Toronto Raptors would be able to trade for DeMar DeRozan which wouldn’t make sense for the team.

The Toronto Raptors continue to show no signs of slowing down after a dominant win over the New York Knicks and apparently their names have appeared in the rumour mill.

A recent report from HoopsHype suggested that the San Antonio Spurs could look to trade DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge with the team struggling this season. They also said via an executive for a Western Conference team that DeRozan could go back to Toronto.

"“It sounds crazy, but Toronto actually makes a lot of sense as a landing spot for DeRozan,” the Western Conference executive said. “As far as what Toronto would have to give up, it would probably have to be a first-round pick plus Serge Ibaka or Marc Gasol.”"

One thing the executive is right about is that the idea of DeRozan being a trade possibility for the Raptors would be crazy. What’s more bizarre about it is what Masai Ujiri would supposedly have to give up to get the deal done.

Considering how the team has thrived with Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby and how much better they will be once Kyle Lowry and Serge Ibaka return, trading for DeRozan wouldn’t make sense.

Not only would his $27.7 million salary be a hefty one, but it would also be tough to see him working in Nick Nurse’s system. He isn’t a great defender and offensively he’s shown that he wants the ball in his hand too much and settles for too many mid-range shots.

Other than the fact that DeRozan wouldn’t be a fit with this Raptors team, why would they give up a couple of assets including a first-round pick? Even though Ujiri has been able to find talent through undrafted free agents, they can’t keep trading draft picks.

While it would be nice to have DeRozan return to Toronto, this isn’t the time to consider that and you have to think Ujiri isn’t ready to cross the bridge right now.
