Backup goalie competition

The Leafs know they need to ensure Frederik Andersen gets enough rest throughout the season but they also have to be confident with who their backup will be just in case Andersen gets injured (knock on wood).

They lost a dependable backup in Curtis McElhinney in favour of Garret Sparks who was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights in the David Clarkson trade. With the Toronto Marlies, it was a mystery at times with their AHL starter but Kasimir Kaskisuo turned his game around in the playoffs with the Marlies.

Right now, Michael Hutchinson is pencilled in as the starting goalie putting up a 2.64 GAA and a .914 save percentage in five games. He will have some competition with Michal Neuvirth being offering a professional tryout and Kaskisuo looking to put his name in the conversation.

As long as the Leafs are confident with the goalies that performed well enough the job rather than make the decision based on success in the AHL, the team shouldn’t have too many problems there.  They can also keep their eyes open on the waiver wire and do the same thing that happened to them last and find a goalie that can be a capable backup or an AHL option too.
