The Toronto Blue Jays pulled the trigger on a Marcus Stroman trade which caught everybody by surprise and some are not too pleased with the return.

For weeks, the rumours surrounding Marcus Stroman suggested that the New York Yankees would be the destination but it was the New York Mets who won the sweepstakes making a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday evening.

On the latest episode of the Tip of the Tower podcast David Morassutti, Jake Middleton and Austin Owens discussed the deal, what this means for the team going forward and they also go through some of Stroman’s biggest moments.

Here is a summary of what to look for on the latest episode, which you can also listen to below or download here.

More from Tip of the Tower

To start the podcast, David and Jake discuss the surprise that came from hearing the Mets made a deal for Stroman considering the team was close to trading Noah Syndergaard and using some of the pieces for Stroman. They also talk about the Blue Jays moving one of the biggest trade deadline pieces and essentially setting the market.

A big issue people had with the trade is that the Blue Jays did not get a top 100 prospect out of the deal but when you look at where the prospects slot on the team’s MLB Pipeline rankings. David and Jake discuss how this trade bolsters the team’s pitching depth chart and when we could expect Kay and Richardson Wood to play into the team’s future.

Austin then joins the podcast to give his take on the reaction on Twitter to the news, and people getting upset which there is justification for but maybe a bit of overreaction considering what the market was like for Stroman.

They also look at the subjectivity of baseball prospect rankings and how Kay was a part of the top 100 before the 2019 MLB Draft prospects were put on the lost. David wonders if the Blue Jays could have gotten more for Stroman but Jake explains why the Chris Archer trade scared a lot of teams from making a similar deal and teams are more inclined to hold on to their top prospects.

What does the Blue Jays rotation look like going forward for the Blue Jays and where does the team go with the rest of their trade deadline trade options like Ken Giles and Daniel Hudson?

To end the podcast, David, Jake and Austin look back on Stroman’s time with the Blue Jays and some of his memorable moments.
