The Toronto Blue Jays will be giving fans something to look forward to when they call up Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Cavan Biggio on Friday
The Toronto Blue Jays will be calling up infielders Cavan Biggio and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for the team’s series finale against the Boston Red Sox on Friday, according to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi.
In a corresponding move, outfielder Billy McKinney and infielder Richard Urena will be sent to triple-A Buffalo.
The Blue Jays selected Biggio in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Amateur Draft. The second baseman was previously selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2013, but he didn’t sign, instead opting to attend the University of Notre Dame.

In 2017, Biggio wasn’t ranked among the Blue Jays’ top 30 prospects. Over the last two years, however, he’s jumped into the ninth spot in the organization’s pipeline.
In 42 contests with the Bisons this year, Biggio has hit .307/.445/.504 with six home runs and 26 RBIs. He’s also managed a team-high 34 walks over that span.
The Bisons also used Biggio in an array of positions around the field. He’s played at first, third, as well as left and right field. Biggio has spent the majority of his time at the keystone, where he’s featured in 22 games.
Gurriel started the campaign with the Blue Jays but played just 13 games before being sent down after a slow start.
He’s earned his way back to the big leagues after a solid stretch with the Bisons that saw him hit .273/.305/.479 with four home runs and 26 RBIs in 30 games.
The 25-year-old is also moulding into a super-utility player. He made appearances at first and second base and at shortstop last season. He was also used in the outfield by the Bisons this year.
Following the promotion of top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Biggio and fellow middle infielder Bo Bichette were the next big prospects expected to make it to the Blue Jays at some point this year. But with Bichette breaking his hand earlier in the month and the Jays’ record getting worse by the day, it looked like they’d be making the jump in September.
Biggio, who’s the son of Baseball Hall of Famer Craig, will likely feature in the lineup on Friday, offering Jays fans another look into the team’s bright future.
