The Buffalo Bills will have many options to consider at ninth overall in the 2019 NFL and while they should take the best player available, defense should be the priority.

Last year, the Buffalo Bills grabbed their franchise quarterback with the seventh overall pick in Josh Allen. Going into the 2019 NFL Draft they should consider going the other way with the ninth overall pick.

Obviously, the Bills offence still needs work but they made it a point to add some veterans in John Brown, Cole Beasley and T.J. Yeldon. but they still lack star talent for Allen. Despite that, the defense is going to need some help replacing some ageing and underperforming players.

Lorenzo Alexander and Jerry Hughes could be gone after this upcoming season so those are holes that will have to be filled. They have pieces on the defense but nothing to get too excited about over the long haul as they do with Allen.

The real question is who should the Bills target?

More from Tip of the Tower

We’ve heard about D.K. Metcalf, the star receiver out of Ole Miss who could be a deadly weapon paired with a strong-armed QB like Allen. The real question is whether the Bills would be better served to grab a receiver in the second or third round?

If the team were to use a first round pick on the offence, it should be on the offensive line on a player like Jawwan Taylor our of Florida or Jonah Williams from Alabama. Buffalo should want to give their franchise quarterback as much support and reaching for a receiver in the first round probably doesn’t sound like the best option.

However, when you look at the defensive side of the ball you can’t help but think a defensive tackle like Ed Oliver would give the Bills something they desperately need in the trenches.

Now, if they prefer to get an edge rusher than Brian Burns would most likely be on the board in the top 10. This gives them a great pass rusher which used to be a big part of the Bills identity on defense.

Considering how unpredictable this draft is going to be, the Bills should keep their focus on what they need to make strides in the AFC East, and having an improved defense would be a massive help in that regard.
