The Toronto Argonauts have re-signed All-Star offensive lineman Ryan Bomben, as they look to rebound from an extremely disappointing 2018 season.

Not many people predicted the Toronto Argonauts would win a second straight Grey Cup in 2018. However, the team was also not expected to finish last season with the worst record in the entire CFL.

Regardless, it is imperative the Double Blue find a way to rebound in 2019 and return to contention. As bad as the ongoing struggles are to build up attendances, this will only be more difficult if there is a losing product on the field.

Along these lines, on Tuesday the Argos took a positive step towards being a competitive team this coming season. As reported by the Canadian Press via the Toronto Sun, the team has re-signed Ryan Bomben.

Bomben’s new deal is for three years, effectively tying him to the Argonauts for the rest of his CFL career. It also means the Burlington, Ontario native gets to remain close to home.

More from Toronto Argonauts

The 31-year-old was traded to the Argonauts by the Montreal Alouettes last July, in exchange for defensive back T.J. Heath and a 2020 third-round pick. He went on to make 12 appearances for the team, including starting 11 games at right guard.

And even as the team struggled around him, Bomben played up to his usual high standard. By the end of the 2018 campaign, he was named an East Division All-Star for the fourth-consecutive year.

As you’d expect from someone who had signed a multi-season extension, the eight-year veteran is delighted to stay in Toronto. As per Argonauts.ca, he said:

"“My family and I are thrilled to be back in Toronto. Last season’s outcome was obviously disappointing, but I believe in the direction this team is going. We have a great group of guys and a great locker room which is why I wanted to come back to the Toronto organization. Jim Popp’s track record is tremendous and I am confident that he will do whatever it takes to put us in the best position to win.”"

While the re-signing of Bomben is an excellent move, there is still the not so small matter of who he will be helping protect in 2019. The quarterback situation remains in flux, courtesy of Ricky Ray.

The Argonauts are patiently waiting for Ricky Ray to decide if he will return or retire. (We’ve made out position quite clear.) At least no matter who does line up under centre, they will be able to feel a certain sense of confidence and security, thanks to Bomben.
