The Toronto Raptors continue to be without Kyle Lowry who is still dealing with some tough injuries that could get worse if rushed back too soon.

If there’s anything Toronto Raptors fans have learned about Kyle Lowry in his time with the team, it’s his unquestioned dedication. However, with the goal to reach the NBA Finals in a realistic view this season the Raptors should continue to proceed with caution.

After defeating the Miami Heat with a last-second three-pointer from Danny Green, Toronto continues their road trip as they will take on the Orlando Magic on Friday and will do it without Lowry again.

The last thing the team wants is for their star point guard to go back to square one if he reinjures himself especially is he is dealing with back spasms. That injured apparently crept in just before the game against Miami and it is an unfortunate setback.

As much as the team would like to get it’s starting lineup together so that it can get some playing time together, it makes no sense to potentially jeopardize Lowry’s long-term health to do it. What the injuries have also done is see who is capable of stepping up in Lowry’s absence.

Fred VanVleet has done a great job filling in for Lowry as the starting point guard which has to be a relief for Nick Nurse and Masai Ujiri. Obviously, the playoffs are the objective and the reason why Kawhi Leonard was brought in. The worst thing the team can do is put themselves in a situation where they lose a key player like Lowry.

MLSE put in a lot of resources towards their sports science and performance for situations like this. It is totally possible to see Lowry return on Sunday against Chicago but down the road, the team should monitor his minutes and consider giving him some games off down the stretch.

Lowry may not want that but this is where the team need to reassure him of the long-term goal and make sure he is capable of producing at the level expected of him.
