Not a stranger to the Great White North

While Montoyo only played four games with the Montreal Expos, that isn’t the only experience he has in Canada as he also played in triple-A Ottawa with the Lynx who were around from 1993-2007.

While he didn’t spend a lot of time in Canada, over the past couple of seasons he would have seen the passion Blue Jays fans have for their team as a visiting coach especially during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

More from Toronto Blue Jays

It will be a big change going from Tampa Bay which has struggled to attract fans to a Blue Jays team that will fill the stadium when it has a winning team. Of course, this will be the focus of management but it won’t come soon.

Montoyo made it a point to address the fact that the Blue Jays are unique because they represent an entire country but if there’s a person who understands that, it’s the Puerto Rican native.

"“I am extremely honoured and humbled to join the Toronto Blue Jays organization and I would like to thank Mark and Ross for this amazing opportunity,” Montoyo stated in a press release. “Managing a team that represents an entire nation is incredibly special. My family and I look forward to working towards the ultimate goal of winning a championship for this city. I also want to recognize the entire Tampa Bay Rays organization for giving me the chance to start my coaching career.”"

Whether he can bring success is going to take some time to determine but the Blue Jays had a clear picture of who they wanted in their next manager and Montoyo fits that mould.
