With the deadline to trade Josh Donaldson quickly approaching, the Toronto Blue Jays received some bad news about his calf injury.

The Toronto Blue Jays are running out of time to find a trade partner for Josh Donaldson and it looks like they’ve hit another snag which could make it even tougher.

According to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi, the third baseman is experiencing soreness in his calves and legs and is being held out of his second rehab game a day after making his return to the lineup. It didn’t seem like there were any concerns about his injury and he even had an RBI single.

It is certainly a frustrating situation for the team and Donaldson, considering how the season has gone and the impact injuries are having on the Blue Jays.

A big topic of conversation lately has been the decision by the front office to hold onto Donaldson and take their chances this season. Of course, nobody could have predicted him to be out of the lineup since May 28 with a calf injury which didn’t look serious at the time.

More from Toronto Blue Jays

When rumours began to surface during the wintertime that the St. Louis Cardinals were interested in Donaldson, it appeared the price set for the former AL MVP was really high showing that the Blue Jays weren’t pressured to move him.

At the same time, there wasn’t a concrete offer to give anybody an idea of what the return would have been. This was the team’s top trade asset and the fact that only one team was showing interest wasn’t going to allow the front office to drive up the price.

It was also at a time where the Blue Jays were looking to sign Donaldson to an extension, but again, there wasn’t enough progress to say that either side was close.

Now this situation has become a nightmare and that’s why it shouldn’t come as a surprise when reports suggested the team wants Donaldson gone. It’s safe to say that any chance the Blue Jays had to move him as soon as he cleared waivers has taken a serious hit.

It doesn’t mean they can’t move the three-time All-Star. However, if there isn’t an offer worth taking then the front office will have pressure on them to decide whether they just let the 32-year-old go as a free agent, or extend him a qualifying offer.
