Canada Football: Alphonso Davies transfer helps grow the game
By Nick McAdam
A transfer sending Alphonso Davies to Bayern Munich will benefit Canada Football and help grow the game in this country for the years ahead.
A record MLS transfer involving Canada Football’s Alphonso Davies took place on Wednesday, as Bayern Munich poured a guaranteed £13.5 million into the player. Goal specifies that performance incentives could actually increase the monetary value of the transfer:
"Bayern has completed a transfer that sources tell Goal is worth a guaranteed $13.5 million (€11.5m/£10m), with performance incentives that could take the deal above $21.5m. The transfer also includes a 15 percent sell-on clause, which will give the Whitecaps a percentage of any future sale of Davies by Bayern."
The total absolutely blows Davies’ market value out of the water, which is beyond magnificent. At the moment, sources such as Transfermarkt rank the current 17-year-old around £725,000.
Davies surely deserves that valuation from his new club as well. This season, he has notched three goals and six assists in both MLS and the Champions League for the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The CAM is also averaging 1.3 key passes per fixture. He has a 80 percent pass success rate and a dribble success ratio of 4.6.
Davies’ stats don’t even begin to describe what he can create on the pitch. He fits Munich’s mold perfectly: physical play when pushing forward, speed on the wing, skill, and a remarkable eye to pick out runs from incredible distances.
Those totals do not include what Davies has been able to do for the national team either. After graduating to Canada Football’s senior squad in 2017, the Buduburam-born midfielder collected another three goals in six contests during the past qualifying campaign.
The move certainly has the promising product excited, as he told ESPN:
"“As a kid, I always dreamed of a moment like this,” said Davies, who signed a contract with Bayern until 2023. “Now that the dream has come true, the work continues as always. I have to keep pushing and keep striving, and also keep being me on the field.“Ever since I joined the Caps when I was 14, they molded me throughout the years into the pro that I’ve become. Thanks to the fans for supporting me, I really enjoy playing in front of them in Vancouver.”"
Davies’ play and overall maturity off the pitch has earned a host of praise from peers, including members of the Whitecaps’ management.

Davies has been a true leader within the national team, which is astonishing at such a young age. He represented Canada at the 2026 FIFA World Cup selection process, and eventually spoke on behalf of his own country.

Caps’ owner Jeff Mallet shared his own desire for the move, when telling ESPN the same sense of excitement that Davies had himself: “This is a landmark transfer for our club, country, and league.”
To go off Mallet’s comment, this transfer is a huge step forward for Canadian football as a whole.
Even though Davies doesn’t represent Toronto FC, the move should bring a smile to every football supporter across the Northlands, especially those who care for the national team.
Playing at Bayern is a huge honor. It’s an obvious statement, but playing alongside some of the world’s best on a weekly basis will certainly help Davies develop into something huge for Canada in the future.
Furthermore, the transfer is bringing more attention to what Canada Football has to offer. Not too long ago, the Montreal Impact sent youngster Ballou Tabla to FC Barcelona. Tabla has recently been involved in Barca’s United States tour.
Abita Hutchinson has been a lock at Turkish club Bestikas, who are making a quiet name for themselves, especially in European competition.
Transfers such as Davies’ are bringing more attention to MLS and Canada from some of the best world football has to offer. It’s very encouraging to see, and we can only hope more players continue to develop in the near future, to the benefit of Canada Football and the county.
