The Toronto Maple Leafs announced the roster for the upcoming Rookie Tournament to be played at Ricoh Coliseum in September.

It was only a matter of time before Toronto Maple Leafs fans found out who would be taking part in the Rookie Tournament. For some of the players, it’ll be an opportunity to show how or if there has been any improvement from Development Camp. For others it’s a chance to make a significant impression ahead of Training Camp.

A player’s performance at this tournament does make a difference. Thinking back to last season, Mitch Marner‘s play was just the beginning of an overall display at camp. Additionally, there are players who may be looking for just an AHL contract.

The tournament roster will have a total of 26 players:

Highlight the forward group are Jeremy Bracco and Carl Grundström who are entering with new entry-level-contracts. Bracco looks to be done in the OHL after winning the Memorial Cup with the Windsor Spitfires. The hope is that the skilled playmaker can duplicate his game in the pros with the Toronto Marlies next season.

Grundström has already had a taste of Marlies hockey. He joined the team during their playoff run and scored three goals and an assist in six games. Whether he plays for the Marlies or back in Sweden next season is the question.

Travis Dermott and Timothy Liljegren are two defencemen Leafs fans should pay attention to. Dermott may be given a legitimate chance to make the Toronto Maple Leafs, but, just like Marner, will wan to have a solid rookie tournament to start his year.

2017 first round pick Liljegren was one of, if not, the steal of the draft. It’s not clear as to whether he stays in North American or plays back in Sweden. However, you have to think that he’ll make the decision harder with a solid performance at this tournament.
