After a big blunder made during the Canadian national anthem last year, Canadians were left frustrated as this year’s rendition raised some eyebrows and received some death stares.

For the second year in a row, the Canadian anthem was the victim of a questionable performance at the MLB All-Star Game. The latest blunder was done by Canadian singer Jocelyn Alice who giggled in the middle of her performance.

As you can see Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak was not a fan of the gaffe made by the 31-year old from Calgary. This reaction from the slugger also drew approval from fans who were clearly disappointed by what they were watching.

That was not the only issue that people had with the way the anthem was presented. Like it has done with many sporting events, Fox decided to run a commercial during the playing of the Canadian anthem, granted they are broadcasting mostly to an American audience but it shows how little they care.

This was not the first time that the MLB has had issues with the performer for the Canadian anthem. Last year Remigio Pereira of the Canadian quartet, The Tenors decided to make changes to the lyrics of the anthem in order to make a statement in support of All Lives Matter. The group had to issue a statment saying that Pereira acted as a lone wolf and were embarrassed by the display.

After that performance there was a major debate going on as to whether the national anthems should be scrapped at sporting events. Despite the blunders made by singers, there is nothing like hearing the crowd roar after the anthem is sung. DeMar DeRozan was quoted in an article by the National Post saying that there is nothing better than hearing the anthem. “It definitely gets you pumped up because it puts it in perspective that you’re playing for something bigger. It’s a country. It’s bigger than basketball” said DeRozan.

There should not be a question as to whether the anthem should be taken out of the pregame ceremonies. It is usually the best part and it should be the job of the game operations to find a suitable performer. There have been times where singers record their anthem so that when they perform it, there are no issues, although the authenticity of performance is what makes it unique.

Canadians should be glad that their anthem singer decided to avoid freelancing this year. Hopefully next year, the MLB can find someone that can sing the anthem without any flaws, something that is proving to be harder to accomplish each year.
