The Toronto Blue Jays will be without Devon Travis indefinitely, after the second baseman underwent surgery on his injured right knee.

When Devon Travis was hit on the left wrist by a pitch on June 4 versus the New York Yankees, he was forced to leave the game. You could almost hear Toronto Blue Jays‘ fans everywhere collectively thinking: “Oh no! Here we go again.”

Fair or not, this is the type of reaction you expect, with Travis already having dealt with injury issues during his first two seasons with the Blue Jays. As such, when X-rays on his wrist came back negative it was viewed as a pleasant surprise, with him expected to avoid the disabled list.

However, in keeping with the narrative of the 26-year old’s time in Toronto, things were not allowed to run smoothly. As such, he did end up on the 10-day DL, due to a bone bruise and a cartilage issue in his right knee.

At the time (on June 6), the Blue Jays were not in a position to offer a timeline for Travis’ absence, until he underwent further testing. However, it has now been confirmed he will be out of action for quite a while.

More from Toronto Blue Jays

As reported by Sportsnet‘s Ben Nicholson-Smith, the second baseman underwent surgery to clean up frayed cartilage in his knee. Nicholson-Smith went on to write that he will be out indefinitely.

The loss of Travis comes at a frustrating time for the Blue Jays, who are fighting to stay in contention. Since the beginning of May, he had been on a tear, batting .352 and hitting four home runs, 20 RBI and 16 doubles, while also stealing two bases.

The West Palm Beach, Florida native has dealt with cartilage issues in his right knee previously, with him taking four months to recover from surgery. Fortunately for the Blue Jays, as pointed out by Nicholson-Smith, the recovery period should be shorter this time, due to there being less damage.

However long Travis is out, his place will be taken by a combination of Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney. With no disrespect meant to Goins or Barney, neither player is expected to be as effective as the man they are replacing.
