Toronto Blue Jays: Is this the year Marcus Stroman wins the Cy Young?
By Vinnie
In 2017, Marcus Stroman has won the World Baseball Classic and he’s hurling an impressive 3.00 ERA for the Toronto Blue Jays. If he keeps up his performance, can the Stro-Show win the American League Cy Young?
Marcus Stroman’s career with the Toronto Blue Jays has been a wild and exciting ride. From having an incredible rookie campaign to having an remarkable recovery from injury the season that followed.
Then dealing with a questionable third season, and now in 2017, he’s won the World Baseball Classic and he’s hurling an impressive 3.00 ERA. Not only that, he’s also doing it with the bat, hitting his first career home run on Thursday night.
Wow, what a roller-coaster of a career the Duke native has had up to this point. It seems like the kid has seen and done it all already at the young age of 26, except he has yet to win the Cy Young award.
He’s entering his prime years and so far the 2017 campaign has gone extremely well. The same can’t be said for the Toronto Blue Jays as a whole, but the 5-foot-8 right-hander is 4-2 after nine starts and has two complete games already.

Stroman’s rookie campaign saw him yield a 3.65 ERA with an 11-6 record on 20 starts. In his second season with the Blue Birds it looked like his season had come to an end before it even started, due to a torn ACL, but he recovered faster than the doctors originally predicted.
He recovered in a Wolverine-like fashion and went 4-0 with a 1.37 ERA. He also tossed his way to a win in his only start in the ALCS that year, going 6.1 innings and giving up four runs.
In 2016, things weren’t going as ‘rainbows and butterflies’ for Stroman. He struggled throughout the season, going just 9-10 with a 4.37 ERA over 32 starts. However, he came through in the clutch during the AL Wild Card game, giving up just two runs over six innings, which eventually led to the epic ‘Edwin Bat Drop’.
After the first quarter of the current 2017 season, the feisty righty has had an amazing start. His WHIP is not so impressive at 1.39, but one could argue he is pitching his way out of jams, displaying maturity and perseverance.
It is way too early to say he’s going to take the Cy Young, since a WHIP that high usually plays out poorly in the long run. However, the ‘Stro-Show’ is so dynamic and such a competitor that it’s hard not to believe we will hear his name being chattered come seasons end for the Cy Young.
This could be the year for Marcus Stroman.
