Toronto Blue Jays rally to beat the Tampa Bay Rays
After losing two straight versus the New York Yankees in the Bronx, the Toronto Blue jays were in desperate need of a win against the Tampa Bay Rays.
If you were to describe the Toronto Blue Jays‘ season so far, it has been down and up and down and up. It has been a roller coaster side. Sure, it hasn’t been all smiles and there’s been frustration, but it hasn’t been all negative.
The Toronto Blue Jays are struggling to get consistent wins, but at the end of the day you can’t get your cake and eat it too. So you just have to hustle and take it one game at a time.
The Rundown
After losing two games against the Yankees, this was a much-needed win on Friday. Franciso Liriano started off strong in the game.
However, after allowing three runs, five hits and five walks, John Gibbons was forced to take Liriano out of the game after just 3.2 innings of work. There’s been much reliance on the bullpen this year and yet again the Toronto Blue Jays were looking for strength in their relievers.
Justin Smoak has continued to succeed and be an ace for the Jays this year. He helped out the Jays again, by scoring the first run of the game.
Danny Barnes also did the Jays a huge favour by retiring all the batters he faced. He will definitely be a crucial reliever for the Jays this year. They can use him in key situations and look for him to put zeros on the scoreboard.
Morales Homers Away
Coming into the seventh inning the Jays were down 3-1, and up to the plate was the big man on campus, Kendry Morales. He showed Chris Archer that the Jays weren’t going down without a fight.
Morales got a huge bomber to tie up the game, and continues to hit successfully against Tampa. He amazingly has an average of over .600 against Archer.
This game proved to be a back and forth affair, as the Jays found themselves again to be down a run. So who do you think saves the day once more?
Morales homers a second time, with a three-run home run to give the Jays a 7-4 lead. He showed to have beautiful timing with his hitting in the game.
But just how does he do it? According to Sportsnet, Morales has no clue himself:
"“I actually don’t know how I do it,” Morales said through a translator. “I just go out there and stay aggressive.”"
Putting The Game Away
With a three-run lead, and with Morales already getting two home runs, it didn’t look as though their would be more anymore. But Smoak proved us wrong.

Smoak goes back-to-back with Morales to make it an 8-4 lead. Both Smoak and Morales have proven to be the aces for the Jays this year.
Now Gibbons was hoping for the bullpen to close out this game, as this has been a consistent problem for the Jays. Thankfully, Joe Smith struck out the side in the eighth inning, really sticking it to the Rays.
As the game was coming to a close, Roberto Osuna was put in a non-save situation, which eased some of the pressure off as he has been shaky this season. Regardless, he pitched perfectly, allowing no hits.
Next: Should Aaron Sanchez have an Extended Break?
The bullpen gave up only two hits, not allowing the Rays offense to come alive in the game. The Jays showed some strong power and muscle against the Rays, which they can hopefully carry on through this season.
