With serious questions being raised about the Toronto Argonauts offence, general manager Jim Popp adds a familiar face in All-Star receiver SJ Green.

Anybody asking who Ricky Ray will be looking to throw the ball to got their answer, as the Toronto Argonauts made a surprising announcement Thursday afternoon by acquiring receiver SJ Green:

“SJ is a dynamic playmaker and a proven winner who gives our offence another weapon and brings veteran leadership to our locker room,” said Toronto Argonauts general manager Jim Popp in a press release. “We are excited to welcome SJ to the Argos family and look forward to seeing him in Double Blue.”

Green has played 10 seasons in the CFL all with the Montreal Alouettes, winning two Grey Cups in 2009 and 2010. He is also a five-time East Division All-Star and 2013 CFL All-Star.

In four of the last five seasons, Green has surpassed 1,000-yards receiving. Overall, he has 444 receptions for 6,626 yards and 42 touchdowns in 116 career CFL games.

In 2016, Green only suited up for two games after injuring his knee. He had three torn ligaments and a torn meniscus which required surgery and extensive rehab.

Back in March, Green told MontrealAlouettes.com he was on track to being ready for training camp, barring any setbacks on his knee. “This has been the most invigorating off-season I’ve had in a long time, just based on the fact that I had to do so much to get back to where I was and more,” he said.

“It’s been fun. It’s been a challenge. But I still have three months left and I’m looking forward to putting the finishing touches on before camp.”

The Alouettes added Ernest Jackson this offseason to compliment a new offence led by quarterback Darian Durant, which makes their decision to move Green surprising. He will likely move to the top of the Argos’ depth chart when it comes to receivers. He should see a lot of attention from Ray, as a veteran presence along with Jeff Fuller and Brian Jones.

Green was not the only familiar face Popp brought back, with Brandon Whitaker also returning last month after it looked like the Argos was going to be moving on from him. The Argos’ roster is taking shape ahead of training camp, which opens on May 28.
