The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly one of a number of teams interested in Craig Breslow, but with his best days probably long gone, are they right to consider him?

With less than three weeks before pitchers and catchers report, the Toronto Blue Jays are still looking to improve certain areas of the roster. This search includes adding a left-handed reliever to the bullpen.

Names previously speculated to be on the Blue Jays’ radar, include Boone Logan, Travis Wood and Jerry Blevins. However, it now appears another southpaw has caught the attention of the front office.

As reported by WEEI’s Rob Bradford, the Blue Jays are reportedly one of a number of teams showing interest in Craig Breslow. The lefty had a workout on Monday, with between 13-16 teams in attendance.

Bradford goes on to say Breslow’s workout opened a lot of eyes. As a result, he has now apparently emerged as a legitimate alternative to the likes of Logan and Blevins in the free agent market.

The biggest reason for the sudden interest in the 2002 26th round draft pick, is due to a change in his delivery, which has added movement and velocity. Of course, if anyone could successfully reshape himself, it would be a player previously described as “the smartest man in baseball”.

Understandably, regardless of his intellect and successful workout, there will still be question marks surrounding Breslow. This is still the same pitcher who has struggled during the last three seasons, which included just 14 innings of action in the Majors last season.

Regardless, due to the 36-year old’s previous success (he has a career ERA of 3.35 over 11 year), he makes for an intriguing possibility. Further, any risk is minimal, with him likely receiving a minor league contract and an invitation to spring training.

Overall, even though Logan or Blevins would be preferable, Breslow could well be worth a gamble by the Blue Jays. However, if they do have a genuine interest they will have to move quickly, with the likes of the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Indians also considering his services.
