With everything that’s transpired over the last few weeks, it’s looking more and more likely that Jose Bautista will re-sign with the Toronto Blue Jays.

In many ways, it’s a case of another day and another rumor, when it comes to Jose Bautista. However, if the latest speculation turns out to be true, there will definitely be a sense of irony to what has transpired since the end of the MLB season.

As far as MLB Network‘s Jon Morosi is concerned, the Toronto Blue Jays are the best fit for Bautista. If this ends up happening, why did this situation have to drag on for so long?

Perhaps the biggest reason comes down to the six-time All-Star’s sense of what he believes he’s worth. In truth, he should not be criticized for this, given how spectacular his production has been since 2010.

More from Toronto Blue Jays

This led to Bautista’s decision to turn down the Blue Jays’ one year qualifying offer of $17.2 million. Unfortunately for him, a whole host of issues have scared potential suitors off, with his age being a main factor.

It also didn’t help that the 36-year was coming off an injury-filled season, which was his least effective since 2009. It didn’t matter that this production was still pretty damn good for most people – all teams perceived this as, was a player who looked set to regress.

As such, no one has been prepared to offer the four/five years Bautista wants. His declining defensive skills have scared off NL teams, while other contenders don’t want to forfeit a first round draft pick.

One of the biggest fears for Blue Jays’ fans, was that the Dominican Republic native would end up joining another AL East team. However, this looks unlikely to happen, due to the divisional rivals looking elsewhere, or — in the case of the Baltimore Orioles at least — just not liking him.

When considering all of these factors, it does seem to make sense that Toronto would be the best fit, for both the player and the team. Bautista loves the city (which is reciprocated), while the Blue Jays still need some outfield help.

Of course, the biggest obstacle remains why we are in this situation in the first place, i.e. the three-time Silver Slugger’s contract demands. However, with everything that’s gone on recently, both he and his agent have to realize he’s not going to get as much money or as many years as first envisioned.

Overall, we’re going to predict Bautista returns to the Blue Jays, after signing a three-year, $45 million deal, potentially with an opt-out after one season. Assuming this happens, you can expect the same chip-on-his shoulder mentality from a player who has constantly had to prove the doubters wrong throughout his professional career.
