This year, you get the feeling the race for the AL East is going to go down to the wire, give or take a few games. As things stand, the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles still have realistic designs on securing a precious division title, which would ensure safe passage to the ALDS.
It can’t be stressed enough how important it is to avoid the unpredictable nature of a winner-takes-all, Wild Card game. Anything can determine the outcome of a one-off contest, from a flukey hit to just plain, awful calls by the umpire.
For what it’s worth, though, consider that Toronto will finish the regular season with a three-game series in Boston. You imagine the Blue Jays and their fans will hope a postseason spot has already been secured before the trip to Fenway Park, to avoid any last-minute anxiety attacks.
