Buffalo Sabres: 5 Questions That Need Answering
By Paul Taylor
3) What’s going to happen with Zemgus Girgensons?
In many ways, Zemgus Girgensons is in a similar position to Lehner. He has the potential, but no one is quite sure what his ceiling is at this stage.

Of course, the biggest difference is that Girgensons’ immediate future is still up in the air. The Sabres made him a qualifying offer, but he never accepted it, as he’s rumored to be seeking a two or three-year deal.
The problem with this is how much of a commitment the front office is willing to make at this stage. As mentioned, the 22-year old has the potential, but he has yet to show any consistency.
Ultimately, the Sabres hold Girgensons’ exclusive NHL rights, so the only leverage he would have, is to play in Europe. It will be interesting to see how things pan out between now and the start of the regular season.
