Forwards

The start of the season was tough for the Leafs as they struggled to produce offensively, finishing 27th in the NHL with 198 goals. Nazem Kadri led the team with 28 assists and 45 points.

More from Tip of the Tower

No Leafs player cracked 20 goals this season and the team’s power play finished second last in the NHL, at 15.6 percent. Losing James van Riemsdyk was a big blow, as he was the team’s leading goal scorer with 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points in 40 games before fracturing his foot.

Leo Komarov had a breakout season offensively with 19 goals, which tied P.A. Parenteau for the team lead. Some of the young prospects were able to show they have potential when it comes to producing at the NHL level.

Nylander had 23 points ( six goals, seven assists) in 21 games, Brendan Leipsic had three points (one goal, two assists) in six games, and Brown had six points (one goal, five assists) in seven games. It will take time for these young players to contribute consistently on offence, but getting the experience in the NHL will make the full-time transition easier.

Final Grade: C-

It is tough to give a grade with the Leafs offence, because for most of the season there was not a lot of talent on the roster. However it looks like there is promise with the young players, and maybe adding JVR, along with an improved shooting percentage from Kadri, could help this Leafs offence produce at a more capable level.
