Kit Lathrop is highly respected within the footballing world, and his addition should prove pivotal to the Toronto Argonauts revamped defence.

The Toronto Argonauts have taken another step towards rebuilding their defence for the 2016 season. As reported by Frank Zicarelli of the Toronto Sun, the front office has signed Kit Lathrop.

Highly respected within the footballing world, the 59-year old has been brought in to coach the defensive line. This is particularly significant, given that the Argonauts have made several additions to this position during the offseason, bringing in Justin HickmanBryan Hall and Brian Bulcke.

Lathrop is perfectly qualified for the role, having previously played as a defensive lineman in the NFL. The highlight of his playing career came after the 1987 season, when he won a Super Bowl ring with the Washington Redskins.

The San Jose, California native played college football at West Valley College and Arizona State University. He also spent time in the USFL, with the Chicago Blitz, Arizona Wranglers and Arizona Outlaws.

Interestingly, Lathrop has worked before with the Argonauts new defensive co-ordinator, Rich Stubler. When Stubler was in Calgary last season, he invited his new colleague to spend time with the Stampeders, as a guest coach.

The two-time All-USFL Team selection has previous been involved in the CFL, in Ottawa, British Columbia and Edmonton. As Zicarelli wrote, the first sign he would be joining the Argonauts came at last week’s CFL combine, when he was spotted with the team.

There has been no formal announcement at this time from Jim Barker and the front office. Regardless of when it becomes official, the Double Blue are getting a man with an exemplary character, which can only help them.
