Goose Gossage just can’t help himself, as he returned to take more shots at the Toronto Blue Jays organisation. This time he ripped into manager John Gibbons, while still finding time to once again criticize Jose Bautista.
The follow-up to Gossage’s original tirade, when he called Bautista a “a f—ing disgrace to the game”, took place on Friday. The nine-time All-Star appeared on ESPN Chicago radio with Tom Waddle and Marc Silverman, for what they admitted was one of the most entertaining interviews they’ve ever had on their show.
To be honest, you have to imagine Waddle and Silverman knew exactly what to expect. All that was needed to set off the powder keg, was to “subtly” steer the conversation in a certain direction.
It all started with Gossage continuing his rant against the Blue Jays six-time All-Star: “It makes my skin crawl when I watch Bautista throw his bat like he threw his bat last year.
“And the whole Toronto team basically acting like fools, jumping up and down. What have they won? Nothing.”
The former Major League pitcher was then asked if he blamed Gibbons for the behavior of the players: “Absolutely … You were supposed to act like a professional.
“Now it’s all about self promoting. Hitting home runs and bombs, showing up the pitcher and trotting around, doing your little act, your tired little act.”
Some people believe professional athletes should act like they’ve been there before when they score, whereas others think they have every right to enjoy themselves as they see fit. However, whether you agree with Gossage or not, the hypocrisy of his rants does not go unnoticed.
For a start, the 64-year doesn’t like players showing up pitchers. However, it’s okay for them to aim pitches to intentionally hurt opponents.
Furthermore, he’s telling players to act like professionals, even though he is ranting and swearing in interviews, despite working in broadcasting and being a member of the Hall of Fame. It might be time for Gossage to take a look in to mirror and reflect on his own conduct.
