The Toronto Raptors are actively looking to improve their roster ahead of the trade deadline, and are reportedly very interested in Thaddeus Young.

More from Raptors Rumors

With February 18 NBA trade deadline fast approaching, the Toronto Raptors have been linked with several players, as they look for ways to improve the roster. Given that Masai Ujiri is notorious for keeping his cards close to his chest, you have to assume any rumors are emanating from the camps of whoever they are apparently interested in.

As we recently reported, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst believes the Raptors are being pretty aggressive in the trade market. Speaking to TSN 1050, he claims they are particularly looking for a power forward, with Thaddeus Young emerging as one of their main targets.

Certainly, Young would make for an enticing addition to the team. While the Brooklyn Nets have struggled this season, he has enjoyed a decent campaign, averaging 15.1 points and a career-high 9.1 rebounds.

After a recent slump, the 2007 12th overall draft pick has had double-doubles in his last three games. In fact, he has already set a career-high this season, with 24 double-doubles.

The question is, do the Raptors even have a realistic chance of getting Young? Apart from the fact the Nets don’t currently have a GM, they will likely want a first round pick at the very least.

Fortunately for Toronto, they are in a strong position in this respect. They currently hold two first round picks both for this year and next.

However, another factor for Ujiri and the front office to consider, is the salary cap implications. Young recently signed a four-year, $54 million contract.

When you consider the 27-year old’s cap hit of $11.2 million this season, at least one player would have to go in the opposite direction. Patrick Patterson seems to be the most likely choice as a starting point.

Certainly, Young would be a good acquisition, providing a nice fit alongside Jonas Valanciunas. However, it remains to be seen how realistic such a trade is likely to be.
