For the second straight week Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco has been named the MLS player of the week. He is the first TFC player to receive the honour in consecutive weeks and the ninth TFC player to win the award. He is also the third player since the start of the 2014 MLS campaign to win the award in consecutive weeks.

More from Tip of the Tower

Against D.C. United the Italian had two goals in a 2-1 victory, which ended D.C.’s home unbeaten streak. This season Giovinco has seven goals and six assists in just 12 appearances for TFC and needs only one assist to break the franchise single-season record. He also tied the franchise record for most game-winning goals in a season with three. In his last five games Giovinco has three goals and three assists. The franchise single season record for most goals in a season (including all competition) is held by Dwayne De Rosario with 17, which he set back in 2010.

Giovinco is also in contention for MLS goal of the week which you can vote for here.

TFC was in for a tough matchup against the top seeded D.C. squad without their captain Michael Bradley, but that did not seem to matter. Giovinco was all over the field trying to use his speed to break away from defenders.

JozyAltidore made a brief appearance in the game after subbing in late in the game. He helped on the second Giovinco goal by letting the ball go through his legs which made its way to the Italian who did the rest.

At the moment TFC finds themselves sitting third in the Eastern Conference with 19 points. They are two points behind the New England Revolution and nine points behind D.C. for first. However TFC does have an advantage in games played which could be key for them moving forward. They have only played 12 games while New England has played 15 and D.C. has played 16. Luckily for TFC, their next game comes on June 20th at home against New York City FC who only have one win on the road this season.

If TFC can get three points against New York and New England loses to the Chicago Fire, they can claim sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference. New England has not won a match since winning 2-1 against the New York Red Bulls on May 2. In their last six caps, the Red Bulls have four ties and two losses. Meanwhile, TFC has five wins, two losses and one tie in their last eight games. Once Altidore is close to 100 percent and Michael Bradley returns, TFC will be a team to watch in the MLS going forward.
