The Leafs will look to snap a three-game losing streak against one of the hotter teams in the NHL when they go up against the Blues, who look like a much improved team from last season. Most of it has come from the play of Vladimir Tarasenkowho is tied for third in the NHL for goals with 24. The Blues pride themselves on great defence and goaltending which has been apparent over the years, but now with Tarasenko scoring, they have a better chance to advance in the playoffs. The last two seasons they were in the playoffs, they have had to go up against the Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings, which are two hard teams to face right out of the gate.

In a way the Leafs would benefit from being a team like the Blues, who have a lot of their draft picks playing key roles on the team. With the additions of players like Jay Boumeester Paul Stastny, and Martin Brodeur (whose future with the team is in question), they have a chance to make a run for the Cup. The Leafs are having a hard time getting a goal, let alone a bounce, to go their way. Against San Jose the Leafs could have had a better fate in that game, but the Sharks found a way to seize momentum in the second period, even though James Reimer played a solid game.

Expect Jonathan Bernier and Brian Elliot to get the starts in goal tonight.

Keys to Victory

The Leafs need to come out strong against the Blues, otherwise the game could get ugly quick.

The Leafs need to avoid being too passive in their own end and not have all five players stand in front of the net like they did on the second goal in the game against the Sharks.

As usual, Bernier will have to be on his game if the Leafs want any chance to win, especially because the Blues will be aggressive on the forecheck and likely force a lot of turnovers.

It would be nice for the Leafs to take advantage of playing against Carl Gunnarsson the former Leafs defenceman, but do not expect the Blues to match him up against Kessel.

If the Leafs can establish a decent effort to start the game, it could give them a chance to pull in close against the Blues, but do not expect a blowout unless Elliot has a bad game.
