The Buffalo Bills acquired their number one receiver when they traded for Stefon Diggs, but this has left the team without a selection in the first round of the 2020 Draft.

The first round of the 2020 Draft likely would’ve seen the Buffalo Bills target a receiver, with the need to provide quarterback Josh Allen with more weapons still fairly high on their wish list.

With the acquisition of Stefon Diggs, which has been looked at in detail here, the Bills addressed their biggest need and must now plan what to do with their first pick in the draft, which comes in the second round (54th overall).

So which route should general manager Brandon Beane go when the Bills are called by commissioner Roger Goodell?

Defence. That effectively sums it up for the Bills, who have reached the playoffs twice in the past three seasons, thanks in large to a sturdy defensive unit working under defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

While the team’s defence has been reliable, two fairly important pieces to the puzzle will not be on the roster in 2020, with linebacker Lorenzo Alexander hanging up his cleats and edge rusher Shaq Lawson joining AFC East rivals the Miami Dolphins in free agency.

With two players leaving the team, there are opportunities for existing players to compete for starting places, but adding a young player through the draft can give the Bills another young option.

The Bills have had some successes on defence coming through the draft in recent seasons, most notably with linebackers Tremaine Edmunds (16th overall, 2018) and Matt Milano (163rd overall, 2017) as well as cornerback Tre’Davious White (27th overall, 2017).

The biggest hole that needs to be filled is arguably at the outside linebacker position, with Alexander’s retirement leaving Sean McDermott‘s team with very few options unless someone is brought in via free agency.

Zack Baun from the University of Wisconsin would be the ideal player to pick if he falls to the 54th pick, with his draft grade sitting him somewhere between the late first round or even early in the third round.

NFL.com gives him a 6.5 draft rating, which sees him sitting on the edge of being a boom or bust prospect, with the potential to be a day one starter on the Buffalo Bills.

During his senior season in the Big Ten, Baun registered a combined 76 tackles with 19.5 of those coming for a loss. He added 12.5 sacks and even returned an interception for a 34-yard touchdown.

He has good size at 6-foot-3, 235lbs and ran a respectable 4.65 40-yard dash at the NFL combine.

He may not be available when the Bills make their first pick, but he should be right at the top of the team’s draft board and even a candidate to jump up in the draft to get him if necessary, giving the team a legitimate starter option right out of the gate.

This position is now the biggest area of need for the Buffalo Bills and taking a player of Baun’s potential would be the most sensible approach, though moving down in the draft to acquire more assets and selecting a lower ranked prospect, such as Michigan’s Josh Uche, may be the route to take.

Next. Bills allow Shaq Lawson to walk. dark
