The Buffalo Bills aren’t done with making additions to their roster ahead of the 2019 season, with the signing of linebacker/safety Maurice Alexander.

Maurice Alexander joins his third NFL team in the Buffalo Bills, with the majority of his professional career coming as a special teamer.

The Bills announced the signing with Alexander listed as a linebacker, joining a strong corps that includes Tremaine Edmunds, Matt Milano and Lorenzo Alexander.

However, throughout his professional career and his final year playing at Utah State, Alexander has moved around the secondary – predominantly performing as a strong safety.

Alexander has started just 23 games out of the 50 he has played in, since entering the league as a fourth-round (110th overall) selection of the then-St. Louis Rams in 2014.

More from Buffalo Bills

He has 118 combined tackles, two interceptions and five pass deflections across his five-year career, with last season seeing him spend nine games with the Seattle Seahawks purely as a special teamer.

With the Bills, Alexander isn’t likely to see much time if he is set on playing as a linebacker, but could be used as a rotational safety if he were to stick with the position he has had the most success with during his professional career.

For the Buffalo Bills, they have added a guy who can play across the field, be it on defence or special teams, with a relatively low reported cost for just one season.

Adding more depth across the team is a sensible decision by general manager Brandon Beane, with the Bills looking at every avenue to get the team back to the playoffs after a disappointing 2018 season.

Alexander may not turn out to be much, but having an extra veteran body can’t do much harm and could even be a valuable piece on special teams if the Buffalo Bills can’t fit him into their defensive scheme.
