With NFL Free Agency now open, the Buffalo Bills appear set to make cornerback Kevin Johnson their first signing in 2019.

According to a report, the Buffalo Bills are waiting for Kevin Johnson and his representatives to look over the details of the deal before signing with the team.

Per WKBW’s Joe Buscaglia, Johnson took a number of free agent visits last week but appears to have settled on joining the Bills after spending his entire NFL career with the Houston Texans.

Johnson was once a first round (15th overall) selection of the Texans in the 2015 draft but has had a largely disappointing career to date.

More from Buffalo Bills

Since entering the league, the now 26-year-old has made just 35 appearances, 18 of them as starts.

Johnson has 122 combined tackles, five tackles for loss, 14 pass defences and just one interception.

Terms of the deal are not yet known, but Johnson joins a team with a fairly strong secondary, most likely keeping the former Wake Forest standout as just a depth signing.

The Buffalo Bills’ potential signing of Johnson shows that they are happy with the back-end of their defence heading into the 2019 season, with a fairly young and healthy Johnson having some potential to cause havoc for opposing receivers.

With the likes of Tre’Davious White, Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde scouring the backfield during games, Johnson won’t likely be relied on too heavily – something that should help him adjust to his new team, especially after missing most of 2018 with a concussion.

Head coach Sean McDermott managed to have his team’s defence playing well last season, with the offence needing a huge injection of talent to help make the Bills a legitimate playoff threat once again.

With free agency just starting, and the Buffalo Bills already have shown a willingness to target big-name players this off-season, some more surprises could be on their way.
