In what has been the most talked about trade in recent memory, former Toronto Raptors star Vince Carter provides his thoughts on the blockbuster deal involving DeMar DeRozan and Kawhi Leonard.

Many have provided their thoughts on the Toronto Raptors’ trading DeMar DeRozan but none are as qualified given Vince Carter’s experience in the city.

His controversial trade from back in December of 2004 remains the most talked about move in franchise history and for good reason.

While the circumstances between the two deals are different, there are some parallels that can be taken from it. Unlike Carter, DeRozan never wanted to leave Toronto or had any issues with the front office (until the trade went through) did but the reaction is fairly similar because of the emotional reaction from fans.

Carter opened up about the deal recently after coming to an agreement with the Atlanta Hawks and was specifically asked about the fallout from the deal.

"“It’s just one of those things where the organization, I guess they saw it different. They wanted to take advantage of an opportunity and who knows if it works or not?” Carter said. “If it works, everybody forgets about it. If it doesn’t, it blows up in their face. I think that’s how these things work, and it’s an unfortunate situation.”“It’s scary. As hurt as he should be and he’s allowed to be, I think it’s an awesome opportunity for him,” Carter continued. “It’s not all the time where a situation happens like this and a player like DeMar goes to a team like the Spurs.”"

The interesting part about Carter’s comments is how he mentions the fact that DeRozan is still going to a good situation because players don’t always end up in a desirable spot. That should soften the blow for DeRozan but he still holds a grudge because he didn’t get prior notice of the move.

When it comes to the trade potentially blowing up in the Raptors face, that still remains to be seen but it is true that there’s pressure on the team to try and reach the Finals.

Many would agree that the Raptors chances of winning without making the trade for Leonard weren’t great and this deal did improve it even for a year.

Now when it comes to the fallout between the team and DeRozan, Carter seems to be convinced that they can reconcile which wouldn’t be too tough to see happen. Even Steven Loung of Sportsnet wrote thinks it’s possible considering fans don’t mercifully boo Carter when he makes his return in a different uniform.
