Toronto Raptors reportedly interested in Greg Monroe
By Paul Taylor
According to TSN’s Josh Lewenberg, the Toronto Raptors are interested in Greg Monroe, but how realistic is it to expect the 2010 seventh overall draft pick to sign with them?
The Toronto Raptors may have added Kawhi Leonard, but they’re still not finished with building a roster which can take them deeper than ever before in the playoffs. Consider a report from Josh Lewenberg of TSN.
Lewenberg advises that the Raptors are looking to add a 14th player to the roster. Citing league sources, he writes that one person they have interest in, is Greg Monroe.
Certainly, Monroe would be an intriguing addition to the team, as he would provide excellent depth. While he has arguably not lived up to the expectations which saw him drafted seventh overall in 2010, he still offers invaluable experience.
The 28-year-old has spent eight seasons in the NBA, most of them with the Detroit Pistons. His career numbers are decent enough, having averaged 13.7 points, 8.6 boards and 2.3 dimes per contest.

Monroe also has the capability to produce a big game every so often. For example, last season he recorded a triple double off the bench (19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists) in a win against the Chicago Bulls, as a member of the Boston Celtics.
The biggest issue the Raptors might have in pursuing the New Orleans, Louisiana native, is money. Last season he earned $5 million and in theory, as per Lewenberg, they have a $5.3 million mid-level exception available to use.
However, the team is already well into luxury tax territory. As such, as noted by Arthur Hill of Hoops Rumors, Toronto may well have to settle for bringing someone in on a veteran’s minimum contract.
How this all plays out, is anyone’s guess at this stage. Ultimately though, as enticing as adding Monroe might be, Toronto Raptors fans probably shouldn’t get too excited about the prospect.
