After an excellent rookie year in college and an impressive showing at the World Junior Championships, what are the chances of Casey Mittelstadt turning pro with the Buffalo Sabres next season?

A couple of months ago, we asked the question of when Casey Mittelstadt would turn pro and sign his entry level deal? The question remains relevant today — and maybe even more so — as the Buffalo Sabres hurtle towards the conclusion of yet another disappointing season.

It’s fair to say things have not exactly gone to plan for the Sabres, since their decision to tank and rebuild. In this respect, bringing Mittelstadt into the fold could provide a much needed boost for a beleaguered franchise searching for answers.

The 19-year-old has been described as an electric talent. Throw in superior puck skills along with a high-level hockey IQ, and it’s no wonder the organization and fans alike are so excited about what he potentially offers.

Mittelstadt’s stock only rose, after his showing at the 42nd World Junior Hockey Championship. He finished tied for the tournament lead with 11 points in seven games and was named MVP.

Now, after an excellent rookie year for the University of Minnesota, the forward has been selected for the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. He finished with 30 points in 34 games, tied for seventh among all NCAA freshmen.

So, what are the chances of Mittelstadt turning pro next season? Pro Hockey Rumors’ Gavin Lee notes that NHL.com’s Mike Morreale believes there is a good chance.

More from Buffalo Sabres

However, it’s worth noting Morreale states he has no inside knowledge, so we really are no closer to knowing the answer. General manager Jason Botterill previously said he wanted the youngster to continue developing at the college level, but that was before the season concluded.

Now, with the Sabres’ ongoing struggles and the franchise looking for ways to keep fans engaged, the pressure is on to get Mittelstadt to sign his entry level deal. The alternative is he returns to the Gophers for his sophomore year.

While the Edina, Minnesota native has arguably already shown enough to turn pro, the only real concern relates to his lack of strength. And while this is something he has worked on during this past season, it still feels too soon for him to sign with the Buffalo Sabres.

From our perspective, we would give Mittelstadt one more year at college to hone his skills. However, we won’t be surprised if Botterill and company do persuade him to turn pro next season.
