After the somewhat surprising decision by the Buffalo Bills to hire Brian Daboll, we decided to find out more about their new offensive coordinator.

The Buffalo Bills didn’t wait long, when it came to finding a replacement for Rick Dennison. As reported by WGR 550‘s Brayton Wilson, the team announced on Sunday that Brian Daboll has been hired as their new offensive coordinator.

It would be reasonable if a lot of Bills’ fans were unfamiliar with Daboll. As such, here are six things we learned about him:

1) Coming home

Daboll is extremely familiar with the Western New York area, after going to high school in Athol Springs. He also played two years of football at the University of Rochester and graduated with an economics degree.

2) First coaching experience

The Canadian’s first experience of coaching came at the college level. He spent one year as a restricted earnings coach at William & Mary in 1997, before taking over as Michigan State University’s graduate assistant for two years.

3) The Patriots

Daboll has 17 years of coaching experience in the NFL, including 11 with the New England Patriots and earned five Super Bowl rings in the process. He held a variety of roles under Bill Belichik, including defensive assistant, wide receivers coach, offensive assistant and tight ends coach.

4) Other NFL experience

The 42-year-old also spent time in the NFL with the New York Jets (2007-08), Cleveland Browns (2009-10), Miami Dolphins (2011) and Kansas City Chiefs (2012). Of most relevance, he was offensive coordinator for every teams, with the exception of the Jets. (Quarterbacks coach.)

5) Offensive rankings

With this in mind, WGR 550‘S Sal Capaccio notes Daboll-led offenses never finished higher than 22nd in yards and 20th in points. In his defense, the quality of quarterbacks at his disposal were never particularly impressive.

6) Back to college

More from Buffalo Bills

Daboll spent the 2017 football season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Alabama. The Crimson Tide ranked 15th in the country in points per game, on the way to winning the CFP National Championship.

Certainly, Daboll has a lot of experience, learning under two of the very best coaches in the business, in Belichick and Nick Saban. No doubt, the Buffalo Bills will be hoping to reap the benefit of this.

One person who is predictably thrilled about the hiring, is Sean McDermott. As per a press release from the Bills, the head coach said:

"“We are excited to hire Brian as our offensive coordinator and welcome him back to Western New York. I know how much this area means to him. He is a good coach and a good teacher, and has been part of winning programs in the NFL and in college.”"

Interestingly, McDermott and Daboll go way back. As per Bills Insider Chris Brown, the two first met at William & Mary, where McDermott was a senior safety.
