Buffalo Bills: Can they rely on Cordy Glenn?

How realistic is it to expect left tackle Cordy Glenn to be a regular contributor this season for the Buffalo Bills?

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott comes across as someone who is upfront and honest. Fans will especially be hoping this is the case, when it comes to Cordy Glenn.

Throughout the offseason, training camp and preseason, one of the biggest talking points has related to Glenn and his lingering foot issue. Will he be ready to go, when the real action starts in Week 1?

Throughout it all, the Bills have been cautiously optimistic the 27-year-old will be on the field, when they play the New York Jets on Sept. 10. At the same time though, concern has grown among fans, as the timetable for his return to full practice has been continually put back.

These concerns are entirely understandable, and not just because sports fans in Western New York are used to things going wrong. With Seantrel Henderson suspended for the first five games of the regular season, the Bills’ offensive line is already going to be shorthanded.

And yet, McDermott has continued to maintain Glenn will be fine. Along those lines, as reported by ESPN’s Mike Rodak, the head coach indicated earlier this week the left tackle is still on schedule to return for Week 1.

In fairness to the Bills, their actions — or lack thereof — back up their stance. Consider that they have never really made a move to strengthen the left tackle position.

Further, as reported by Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News, the Bills have no intention of moving Dion Dawkins over to provide cover. The rookie right tackle is competing with Jordan Mills to start at right tackle.

Regardless, fans will likely not have any real confidence until Glenn actually steps onto the field. He recently flew to Wisconsin to receive an injection in his foot, while his participation in practice has been both fleeting and limited.

Ultimately, it may turn our these concerns are entirely unwarranted. Further, the 2012 second round draft pick has a history of being extremely durable, since turning pro.

For now though, all eyes will be on Glenn in the coming days, as we count down towards the start of the NFL regular season. For the sake of Bill fans everywhere, here’s hoping he’s on the field for the first offensive snap versus the Jets.
