Aaron Sanchez is close to being ready for a rehab assignment, but when can the Toronto Blue Jays actually expect him to return to the starting rotation?

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before – Aaron Sanchez is on the disabled list, attempting to recover from a blister issue and return to the Toronto Blue Jays‘ starting rotation. This is already his third stint on the DL this season, as he battles with ongoing problems surrounding his right middle finger.

Unlike Sanchez’s first two trips to the DL, at least the Blue Jays seem to be taking their time on this occasion, rather than trying to rush him back. However, the question still lingers of when he is likely to be back on the mound in the Majors?

In that respect, there was some good news earlier this week. As reported by Steve Buffery of the Toronto Sun, Sanchez threw a bullpen session off the mound on Monday.

The next step will take place on Thursday in Florida, when the 2016 All-Star will throw a live batting practice session. Assuming this goes well, he will be cleared to start a rehab assignment with High-A Dunedin.

Of course, this still doesn’t answer the question of when Blue Jays fans can realistically expect Sanchez to return to the rotation? In reality, it’s still guesswork at this stage.

According to Rotoworld, the 2010 first round draft pick will likely need multiple rehab outings before being activated. Meanwhile, MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm writes that it’s possible he could return before the All-Star break.

As for the Blue Jays themselves, they are taking a wait-and-see approach. Speaking to Buffery and other members of the media, manager John Gibbons said:

"“If things keep progressing, a few days after (Thursday) he’ll pitch in a game in Dunedin. And then we’ll see how that goes. He’s going to need at least starts in Dunedin.”"

Understandably, the Blue Jays and their fans would love to see Sanchez back sooner than later. He would undoubtedly provide a boost for a team that has seemingly been hovering around the .500 mark all season.

However, remaining patient is key here, even if it means the 24-year old doesn’t return before the All-Star break. He has been contending with this blister issue since before the regular season even began, and in fact ever since he first joined the organization.

Ultimately, this is about doing what’s best in the long-term for both the individual. Even if it contributes towards the Blue Jays missing out on a third consecutive trip to the postseason.
