Jack Eichel continues to grow his reputation by clinching a win for the Buffalo Sabres in the last second of overtime, against the Carolina Hurricanes.

It turns out this Jack Eichel kid might be something special for the Buffalo Sabres. Who would have thought that about someone taken with the second overall pick of the 2015 NHL entry draft?

All (attempted) joking aside, mark Saturday March 12 in your diaries as the defining moment when the Sabres and their fans officially realized they have a long-term superstar on their hands. For anyone who missed it, or just wants to see it again, here is that moment:

It really doesn’t get much more exciting that winning a game with just one second remaining. The goal represented Eichel’s second of the afternoon, giving him a team-leading 22 on the season.

More from Buffalo Sabres

There was some criticism when it was reported before the draft that the 19-year old apparently said he would only sign a professional contract with the Sabres, if they guaranteed he would start the season in Buffalo (as opposed to remaining in college for another year). True or not, it’s hard to argue with this now, when you consider what he has done during his rookie campaign in the NHL.

As an aside, it’s also worth noting the contribution of Evander Kane in the 3-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes. Fresh off being cleared of any wrongdoing in an investigation into a sexual encounter from December, he had an assist on both of Eichel’s goals.

After the struggles and embarrassment of the previous two seasons, Sabres fans can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. With the likes of Eichel and Kane on board, it sure seems like special times are just around the corner.
