Bring James Reimer back for the redemption narrative

Going into last off-season, there weren’t many goaltenders the Leafs could target in free agency and they ultimately settled on Petr Mrazek giving him a three-year, $3.8 million deal that fans and likely some in the front office would want a redo on.

Ironically enough, James Reimer was a part of the same goaltending tandem in Carolina but fell out of favour with Mrazek and Alex Nedeljkovic moving ahead of him on the depth chart. The San Jose Shark signed Reimer to a two-year deal with a $2.25 million cap hit.

Safe to say, given that Reimer has 15-12-5 record with a .916 sv% and a 2.84 GAA in 34 games with San Jose, looks a lot better than Mrazek right now. Is there some bias considering Reimer was a fan favourite when he first arrived on the scene through the Leafs’ system? Partially, but if we are putting emotions aside, the results speak for themselves and Reimer also comes with a more reasonable commitment going forward.

Unfortunately, the Sharks goalie is out with a lower-body injury and unless he is going to be back soon, it might not make sense to trade for him if he isn’t returning anytime soon.

Other options to consider: Karel Vejmelka: Might get moved if the Coyotes cannot agree on a new deal. Braden Holtby: Stars have yet to commit on buying or selling and could hold on to the veteran if they make the playoffs. Alexandar Georgiev: Seems like the Rangers want a significant return with many other teams interested.
