Other game notes

Toronto FC has held the edge in possession in all three of their regular season games so far in 2022. On Saturday, they had a 52-48 percent advantage.

It was a particularly proud day for the club, with seven Canadians in the starting lineup. This included Noble Okello, who started in midfield to fill in for Bradley.

Another Canadian joined the action in the 82nd minute, when Kosi Thompson replaced Okello. This substitution was notable, as it represented Thompson’s first team debut.

Despite some questions in the lead-up to Saturday’s game, Alex Bono got his third consecutive start in net. He had five saves on the day, included two excellent ones which stopped the final deficit being greater.

Toronto showed their fight, with a 62-53 and 22-8 advantage in duels and tackles won respectively. Interestingly though, Columbus committed more fouls (9-8) and received more yellow cards (3-2).

Apart from his assist, Pozuelo also showed his willingness and work-ethic with a team-high six tackles. Meanwhile, Okello attempted the most shots and Luca Petrasso was involved in a team-leading nine duels.

The Reds are now without a win in nine league games in a run which dates back to last season, with four draws and five losses. Their last victory was against the Chicago Fire early last October, when they won 3-1 at BMO Field.

TFC’s next game will be back home, versus D.C. United. It will take place on Saturday March 19, kicking off at 3:00 pm ET.

Quote of the day

MacNaughton shared his thoughts on a game that was there for the taking. As per James Grossi of Torontofc.ca, the defender said:

"“We’re obviously disappointed. If you go into halftime up 1-0 you expect to win the game, especially when you’re playing well and you’re creating chances. And we had a chance, one or two at least, to go 2-0 up and I think at that point, if we do that makes the game quite easy, so we’re disappointed.”"
