2) Who is the main man in net?
One of the most intriguing questions surrounds who will be TFC’s number one goalkeeper in 2022? Quentin Westberg or Alex Bono?
Westberg got the start in net on Wednesday, allowing the aforementioned goal in the opening 45 minutes. However, it’s interesting to note he was the only starter to remain on the pitch after the Reds made wholesale changes to begin the second half.
As for Bono, he started the last game versus Chicago and while he only played the first half, it was notable for him keeping a clean sheet. With Westberg previously starting against Austin FC, you would assume Bono will be in net for the final preseason game on Saturday, when TFC face Sporting KC.
Of course, if Westberg gets the nod again, this would allude to him being the starter when the regular season begins the following Saturday against FC Dallas. However, we believe Bono will get another shot, thus bringing us back to the question of who will be the main starter?
This writer will admit to having a preference for Bono, swayed by him being younger and having already shown he can be the number one goalie in an MLS Cup-winning side. Regardless, TFC is in a good position of having two capable and experienced starting goalkeepers.
