Toronto FC reportedly pursuing Genoa duo Destro and Criscito
By Paul Taylor
Toronto FC is again looking to Serie A to further boost their roster, with an apparent interest in Genoa teammates Mattia Destro and Domenico Criscito.
Toronto FC has consistently made headlines during the MLS off season, as they continue to revamp their roster after arguably the worst season in club history. Just think about what has happened within the last week alone.
TFC signed forward Jesus Jimenez and acquired $575,000 in General Allocation Money. Meanwhile, Jozy Altidore announced his departure, Sebastian Giovinco signed for Sampdoria and Auro Jr. is also expected to leave.
As such, it should come as no surprise the Reds are in the news again as they continue to shape their team ahead of the beginning of the MLS regular season on Feb. 26. And after their successful pursuit of Lorenzo Insigne, it once more involves Serie A.
As reported by Apollo Heyes of Football Italia, Toronto FC is apparently interested in Genoa duo Mattia Destro and Domenico Criscito. They have a longstanding working relationship, having previously also played together for Geno in 2010-11.
Beginning with Destro, Heyes writes that TFC is currently in talks with the forward. Similar to Insigne, his contract is due to expire at the end of the current Serie A season.
The 30-year-old is enjoying a fine season with Genoa, with eight goals in 16 league games. He has a good pedigree, having previously played for Roma and AC Milan, along with being capped eight times by Italy.
Destro has pace and a high footballing IQ, while also being a confident finisher. He has an excellent work rate and fitness levels, meaning he is always capable (and willing) to drop back and be involved in the buildup play.
Turning to Criscito, this is not the first time TFC has been linked with the defender. Certainly, he would provide a boost to a defence which allowed a club-worst 66 regular season goals last year.
The 35-year-old primarily plays as a left back, but is more than capable of lining up at centre-back or as a winger if required. He remains a durable and consistent starter, even at this stage of his professional career.
Criscito additionally provides an attacking threat which is evidenced by six goals this season, four behind a career-best 10 just two years ago. His experience includes a brief period with Juventus and 26 caps for the Italian national side.
As much as it may seem optimistic to pursue Destro and Criscito, TFC is definitely justified after agreeing a deal with Insigne. If they even sign one of the duo, it will still represent another major success for the Reds.
How realistic do you think it is that Toronto FC will be successful in their pursuit of Destro and Criscito? Is there anyone else you would like to see the Reds target in Serie A, who they may have a chance of signing? Let us know in the comments section below.
