2) Expected to improve the defence significantly

Last year was an unmitigated disaster for the Reds. They set club records for most goals allowed and worst goal difference in a regular season.

With this in mind, TFC decided to revamp the defence, including bringing in Shane O’Neill and Lukas MacNaughton. The addition of Salcedo can only further improve a back line looking to drastically improve.

As we’ve written previously, Salcedo is a tough, physical player who is strong in the air, while also being comfortable on the ball. He will primarily line up as a centre-back, but is capable of playing in the full back position if required.

The Guadalajara, Jalisco native previously played in Serie A and Bundesliga, with Fiorentina and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively. This experience should prove invaluable for the Reds and their defence specifically.

Head coach and sporting director Bob Bradley paid a major compliment to Salcedo, by comparing him to legendary former Real Madrid player Sergio Ramos. As per Neil Davidson via the Toronto Star, Bradley said:

"“I see some similar qualities in Carlos. So we want to bring out the best of him and he’s very motivated to play an important part in the success at TFC. He has big goals.”"
