Toronto FC officially confirm Lorenzo Insigne signing: 6 takeaways

3) Insigne vs. Giovinco
Fair or not, Insigne will be compared to Sebastian Giovinco. While the former has been significantly more successful on the international stage, he still has a lot to live up to in Toronto.
Giovinco is the best player in TFC history, currently standing as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. His resume during four years in Southern Ontario includes an MVP award, one Golden Boot, four All-Star selections and being named three times to the MLS Best XI.
However, it’s the team success which really makes Giovinco the golden standard, helping the Reds win the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup in 2017. Fans will be looking for a similar level of success from Insigne.
4) Designated Player situation
Insigne will be added to TFC’s roster as a Designated Player once he receives his International Transfer Certificate. This understandably leads to resolving the Reds’ current designated player situation.
As things stand, the three slots on the team are assigned to Alejandro Pozuelo, Yeferson Soteldo and Jozy Altidore. The question is, who will be moved to make way for Insigne?
Soteldo seems like the safest bet after failing to settle in Toronto, with reports linking him with a move to Brazil. Meanwhile, Altidore is apparently in talks with TFC to agree terms to terminate his contract.
