The Toronto Argonauts weren’t able to overcome their mistakes in their loss to the Roughriders as the team learned a critical lesson.

Over the last few games, the Toronto Argonauts have been making mistakes that have left some frustrated because they are errors that are correctable.

Whether it’s missed tackles or penalties, the Argos know this is an area they need to clean up because it continues to put them behind in games. They were fortunate to be within striking distance of the Saskatchewan Roughriders because that game could’ve gotten out of hand in the first half.

Going into the game, Toronto’s defence was among the best against the run but allowed William Powell to rush for a season-high 122 yards and the Roughriders to put up 182 yards on the ground. Part of that had to do with poor tackling but also the departures of Cameron Judge and Henoc Muamba.

It wasn’t just the defence that was to blame for how the game turned out because the Argos offence once again didn’t execute plays when the time called for it. There were chances in the endzone that led to a turnover on downs and a 15-yard field goal.

Nick Arbuckle had his struggles in the first half but give him credit because he was able to turn things around in the second half as he relied on Eric Rogers, DaVaris Daniels and Ricky Collins Jr. to try and spark a comeback. Getting off to a better start offensively is something to watch for against the Montreal Alouettes.

Can the Toronto Argonauts overcome undisciplined play that lead to penalties?

One thing that hurts a team is taking a penalty that keeps the defence on the field by handing a first down to an opponent. The Argos had 12 penalties for 112 yards with 79 coming on defence.

It’s not something any team wants to deal with going forward but we’re not talking about something that happened in one game, Toronto has been guilty of taking too many penalties on multiple occasions. This is something the veteran players will need to get the team to focus on going forward.
